Verb Groups

Group 1, う Verbs

How do you recognize them? _extra "i" syllable in the "masu" form

How do you make the dictionary form? __change the "i" syllable to an "u" syllable 
                                                                                     with the same consonant.

How do you make the plain negative? _change the "i" syllable to an "a" syllable and
                                                                                        replace "masu" with "nai"

How do you make the te form? __sing the "te" form song, which explains how to
                                                                       make "te" form for each Group 1 verb

How do you make the plain past form?__change the "te" in the te-form to a "ta"

How do you make the potential? _change the "i" syllable to an "e" syllable 
                                                                       with the same consonant

Examples_会う　たつ　　すわる　読む　あそぶ　書く　およぐ　話す

Which verbs look like Group 1 verbs but are actually Group 2 verbs _起きる

Group 2　る  Verbs

How do you recognize them? _all end in "imasu" or "emasu" in the "masu" form

How do you make the dictionary form? _take off the "masu", put on "ru"

How do you make the plain negative? _take off the "masu", put on "nai"

How do you make the te form? _take off the "masu" and put on "te"

How do you make the plain past form? _take off the "masu" and put on "ta"

How do you make the potential? _take off the "masu", add "raremasu"

Examples _見る　食べる　寝る　あける　しめる　起きる　あびる

Group 3　“Irregular” Verbs

How many are there? _Only２

List them _します　　来ます（きます）

How do you recognize them? _Just have to memorize

How do you make the dictionary form? _Just have to memorize   する　
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　来る（くる）

How do you make the plain negative? _Just have to memorize しない
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　来ない（こない）

How do you make the te form? _Just have to memorize  して
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　来て（きて）

How do you make the plain past form? _Replace the "te" in the "te" form with "ta"

How do you make the potential? _Just have to memorize     出来る（できる）
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　来られる（こられる）

　　　　The student studied Japanese and read the textbook.

　　　　きせつ　は　春　でした　が　おてんき　は　寒かった　です。
　　　　The season was spring, but the weather was cold.

Verb plain past　ほう　が　いい　です。　You had better do/should do

Verb plain present negative　ほう　が　いい　です。You had better NOT do...
