Homework will not be due tomorrow, but MONDAY.

Did you hear the storm last night? 　One of the words for storm is arashi  嵐　あらし.

You could also call it ooame  大雨　おおあめ　big rain.  That’s what I heard last night and that’s what woke me up.

We should be familiar with 雨 because it’s part of the 電 でん  from　電車 　でんしゃ。

電 electricity/electric is　雨　あめ　plus what I think of as a little kite at the bottom.  It makes me think of Benjamin Franklin holding up his kite in a rain　storm in order to find out if lightning were really electricity.

 (The bottom of 電  doesn’t really mean kite. I’m just imagining that it does, with its little hook for the tail and the rice field for the square paper part of the kite.)

雨　あめ　is its own radical, which is radical number 172 in Nelson’s Japanese-English Character Dictionary.  I think I can see raindrops in the kanji for rain.  It’s the radical for  電  でんwhich we know already, plus thunder   雷かみなり 。The thunder kanji 雷 appears on the giant lantern at the great gate at Asakusa’s Sensou-ji Temple in Tokyo.  Many, many people take photos there, and I’ve taken them too.

So now let’s look at wind  風, which is also a component of the storm I/we heard last night.

Wind is  風　かぜ    and, like rain, it is its own radical, #182.　I think of it like this:  “when there’s wind, a bug 虫　むしhides under a table.”

And now we’re back to storm  嵐　あらし, whose radical is mountain 山　やま, which we know。I have thought of the storm kanji as a “mountainous wind.”

OK, let’s practice reading these kanji in context, while usingが "but," から "therefore," and verb's －てフォー " and" to connect clauses.

Examples:

あした　テスト　が　ある　から　私　は　うち　に　いて　勉強　します。　There will be a test tomorrow, therefore I will be/stay at home and study.

私　は　テスト　が　こわく　ありません　が　友達　は　テスト　が　大きらい　です。I am not afraid of tests but (my) friend hates tests.

A.   Here are the sentences.

1.     今日（きょう）私　は　いそがしい　です　が　出かけます。

2.     山　の　上　に　嵐　が　あります　から　かさ　を　もって (hold, have)　行きます。

3.     雨　が　ふります(will fall)　が　私　は　ぜひ(certainly, without fail)　あるきます(will walk)。

4.      風　は　うるさい　です　が　私　は   友達　と　あるいて (walk),　すきな　うた　を　うたいます。

5.     レーンコート　を　きて、ブーツ　を　はきます。

B.  Find out everything you can about Tokyo’s Sensou-ji Temple in Asakusa and write me 4 sentences about it, 英語　で。If you can, attach a photo of the great gate’s lantern with its  雷 かみなりthunder  kanji.　Reminder:  雷　is  電  without the tail.

OK, let’s practice writing these kanji while usingが but、から therefore、and －てフォーム and to connect clauses. Use only plain forms of verbs (except for te forms)

Examples:

I hate tests but I will study.  私　は　テスト　が　きらい　だ　が、勉強　する。

Today I am busy therefore I won’t go out.  今日　私　は　忙しい　から　出かけない。

All day I will wear slippers, and I will wear pyjamas.  一日中（いちにちじゅう）私　は　スリッパ　を　はいて、パジャマ　を　きる。
