Nakama Chapter 6  -- uses of から

 

から is a convenient relational particle that has multiple uses

1.     Talking about where someone or something has come from.

あの　人　は　どこ　から　来ました　か。Where did that person come from?

 

とうきょう　から　来ました。日本人　です。He/she came from Tokyo.  She/He’s a Japanese person.

 

2.     Making statements about cause and effect, actions and therefore the results

その　ゆうまいな　レストラン　は　高い　です　から、私　は　行きません。That famous restaurant is expensive; therefore I won’t go (there).

 

            あさひ　新聞　は　おもしろい　です　から　学生　は　　

　　  読みます。The Asahi Shinbun/newspaper is interesting; therefore the

            student will read it.

 

3.     In combination with another relational particle, まで　to indicate times when items begin and end, or beginnings and ends of travel.

上越（じょうえつ）新幹線（しんかんせん）　は　とうきょう　       から　にいがた　まで　行きます。The Jouetsu Bullet Train goes from Tokyo to Niigata.

えいが　は　７時　から　９時半　まで　です。The movie time is from 7 o-clock until 9:30.
