While doing the warm-up, some students had trouble understanding the questions:  "At the time of Thanksgiving, what do you like to eat?  At the time of Thanksgiving, what do you like to drink?"

When you talk about liking to do something, you use the dictionary form plus no, and then add suki desu.

Examples:
本　を　読む　の　が　すき　です。I like to read books.
かんじ　を　書く　の　が　すき　です。I like to write kanji.
こうこう　に　行く　の　が　すき　です。I like to go to high school.
うち　に　帰る　の　が　すき　です。I like to return-home to (my) house.


After the warm-up, the class looked at the verb conjugation handout and practiced changing masu verbs into their dictionary forms.　　Many were not able to finish, so Sensei put off collecting it until tomorrow.

下　の　日本語　の　ぶんしょ　を　読みます。それから　えい語　で　書きます。You will read the Japanese sentences below.  After that you will write them in English.

スティッチ　は　私　の　あおい　ともだち　です。
Stitch is my blue friend.

スティッチ　は　スポーツ　が　大すき　です。

ボーリング　や　やきゅう　を　よく　します。
He often does bowling and baseball.

私　は「ボーリング　と　やきゅう　と　どちら　が　すき　です　か。」と　言いました。{I said}
I said, "Between bowling and baseball, which do you like better?"

スティッチ　は　「ボーリング　より　やきゅう　の　ほう　が　すき　です。」と　言いました。(Stitch said)
Stitch said "I like baseball better than bowling."

After going over the warm-up and explaining the sentences, students read from their homework questions and answers as to preferences.


Then there was a discussion of the plain negative form, now that we know the dictionary (plain affirmative) form.

Group 1:   (also known as "u" verbs)
most numerous
complex but regular conjugation
there is always an extra "i" syllable before the "masu"
to make the dictionary form:
      take off the "masu" and change the "i" syllable to a "u"
      syllable in the same hiragana line
to make the plain negative
       take off the "masu" and change the "i" syllable to an "a"
        syllable in the same hiragana line, and then add "nai"

Group 2 :   (also known as "ru" verbs)
second most numerous group
easiest to conjugate
always ends in "imasu' or "emasu"
to make the dictionary form:
        take off the "masu" and add "ru"
to make the plain negative
         take off the "masu" and add "nai"

Group 3:
irregular
fewest verbs -- only 2 verbs
they are   します  and　来ます（きます）
you just have to memorize the plain forms
dictionary form of   します  is 　する
plain negative form of  します　is　しない
dictionary form of   来ます（きます）  is 　来る（くる）
plain negative form of  来ます（きます）   is  来ない（こない）
