"A wasp always stings a crying face," Mama used to say. The Kawamura family and others are finally released from the internment camp after Executive Order 9022 is declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. However, the family has been shattered by Papa's and Harry's death, and by Charlie's deportation to Japan. Having no home in Los.Angeles to return to, the family goes to Florin, California, to stay with distant relatives. While they are there, American forces drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, causing over 200,000 immediate casualties. The Kawamuras, like many Japanese immigrants to the U.S., came from Wakayama Prefecture, where the city of Hiroshima is. They are devasted by the news, which affected distant family and friends still in Japan.
However, at the end, Jack returns from the Army. Minae and Lily meet him at the train, and they are joyfully reunited.
