Past tense い adjectives

“Oh joy!” you’re probably thinking.   “We had to conjugate い adjectives in the negative?  Now we have to do the past tense, too?”  Yes, unfortunately, that is a requirement when learning Japanese.  However, the negative of い  adjectives (at the end of sentences, before です)  is actually easy to create.

You take off the   い   and the   です   .  Then you replace the い   with  かった    and put the   です  back on again.

Examples:

一.わるい です It is bad.

      わるかった です。 It was bad.

二.本 は あかい です。The book is red.

      本 は あかかった です。The book was red.

三.木 は 大きい(おおきい) です。The tree is big.

      木 は おおきかった です。The tree was big.

下の日本語をよみます。それから えい語 で かきます。You will read the Japanese sentences below, and after that, you will write them in English.

一.えいが は おもしろかった です。

二.ともだち の おかあさん は やさしかった です。

三.私 は テレビ の ばんぐみ(Program)が たのしかった です。

四.きのう の りか(Science)の クラス は むずかしかった です。

五.先週(せんしゅう)クラスメート は いそがしかった です。
