Happy First Day of Spring!  The kanji for spring is 春 はる

Here is the translation of a famous haiku by Matsuo Bashō      松尾芭蕉

”Sitting quietly, doing nothing, Spring comes, and grass grows by itself.”

😊I wish I could see your spring faces today!  I hope you're able to get outside a little bit, safely.😊

The Chinese government says it has officially decided to use the Japanese-developed anti-influenza drug Avigan in treating people infected with the new coronavirus.  Please look at this encouraging link.

Some 日本語の vocabulary relevant to the current situation:

コロナウイルス                    Corona virus

情報    じょうほう                  information

誤報   ごほう                         misinformation

感染    かんせん                 infection

インフルエンザ                    influenza

マスク             (medical or industrial) mask (the counter is まい)

手 を 洗う           to wash hands  (て を あらう Group 1 verb)

健康な けんこうな healthy (na adjective)

***I saw a wonderful little story on NHK.***  Here is the headline:

山梨県甲府市 中学生が自分で作った600枚のマスクを贈る。

You know some of these 漢字 kanji, right?

The headline says, "A middle school student in Yamanashi Prefecture, Koufu City, donates 600 masks she made herself."

What an outstanding young person!  Her name is Takimoto Hime, and she sewed them on her mother's sewing machine.

令和二年三月十八日 -- 水曜日

  おはよう ございます、みなさん

Here is a link to a YouTube video I found about learning 漢字 kanji.
https://youtu.be/mPppVDX_GiY

It organizes the 漢字 kanji by radicals, the portions of 漢字 kanji used to put them in categories, enabling us to look them up in 漢字 kanji dictionaries (yes, such things exist).

There are 10 radicals shown in the video, and we know these radicals already.  We've also studied some of the kanji the video presents.  This may be a new way for you to think about them.

If you  want to do this, I suggest looking at just one or two radicals each day, not more, so that you're not overwhelmed.

I don't agree with everything here, but I think you would find this video to be useful.

Japanese 3-4

How is it going?  Have you been able to find images connected to Nakama Chapter 8 so far?  How about writing about them, using the vocabulary from Chapter 8?

Here's an example.  Imagine a photo of Takashimaya Department Store 高島屋デパート:

日本 に ゆうめいな デパート が あります。There is a famous department store in Japan.

たかしまやデパート です。It is Takashimaya Department store

あそこ で 買い物 を する の が 好き です。I like to do shopping (way over) there.

先月 私 は しんしふく うりば に 行きました。Last month I sent to the men's clothing department.

友達 の たんじょうび でした から あおい セーター を 買いました。It was my friend's birthday, therefore I bought a blue sweater.

三千円 でした。It was 3,000 yen.

March 17, 2020 -- Tuesday          Happy St. Patrick's Day!
             パトリック聖人の日おめでとう

令和二年三月十七日 -- 火曜日 Second day of the hiatus

Hi Everyone,
Please check Skyward, your email, and this blog every day.  I hope all of you now have the messages I sent, including the kanji sheets for numbers and for Nakama Chapters 4-12.
How was yesterday?  I hope it was not too confusing or stressful.  I thought about you a lot and wondered if you were watching TV or playing video games, or cooking, or reading.  Staying home can be hard, but it can also be peaceful.  And you can FaceTime your friends!
I miss you!
キメル先生より

Have you started working on your daily sentences-with-images yet.  If not, please start.  Each day that you do some writing and reading of Japanese will be good.  The assignment is to write only 5 sentences per day and save them, with the image, in the same document.

Here is a light-hearted culture note that I found.  読んで下さい。楽しんで下さい。Please read and enjoy.  If you feel like it, draw me a picture of your idea of an amabie, the yokai that Japanese folkloric tradition tells us will fix epidemics.  Drawing the photo is supposed to keep you safe!

http://www.spoon-tamago.com/2020/03/13/amabie-japanese-epidemic-yokai/#more-47852

If you draw it and bring it to school after we get back together, I will enjoy it and share it with others, if you want me to.

こんにち は、みなさん。おげんき です か。

I sent you all regular email yesterday, and I hope you've seen it.

Where to post your attendance

It turns out that we don't have to post attendance!

March 16, 2020 -- Monday -- First day of the hiatus

令和二年三月十六日 -- 月曜日

Dear Students,   学生 へ

I miss seeing your faces!  But I am glad that we can be connected by email and by this blog.  We are still a group.  And you are all friends.

仲間 なかま a group, especially a friendly group

友達 ともだち friend

友人 ゆうじん friend (formal)

皆さん、お体を大切にして下さい。
みなさん、おからだ を たいせつ に して ください。
Please take care of your health, everybody.

All students, please go to the link below and read about this outstanding artist, Noda Tetsuya.  I think he has an exhibition now at the Art Institute, but we can't go see him at the moment. 😢

You will see that his art chronicles his own life, with images and dates.

This artist inspires our underlying assignment for this week of hiatus.

Choose an image each day (not from the article), and write about it in Japanese.  You should write 5 complete sentences each day with some connection to the image.

Put all five days of images and sentences into a single document and send it to me by email on Friday. You will see that Japanese 3-4 and Japanese 5-6 should focus on different areas of vocabulary and grammar. .

If you can type Japanese fonts, type the document.

If you can't type Japanese fonts, write by hand, scan the document, and attach it to the email you will send me on 金曜日.  If you can't scan it, send me an email and I will give you a street address to send it to.

Also, I will give you short grammar and reading practice sheets as well, on some days.

We will go over all these things when we get back together again.

Japanese 3-4

You should use as much of Nakama Chapter 8 vocabulary (and as many of the kanji from the Chapter 8 kanji sheet, which I will email to you) for this assignment as possible.  There's a lot about clothing, department stores, prices high and low, and counters for various items, for example.  Maybe we shouldn't go to crowded stores now, but we can imagine where we would go and what we would buy and how much things would cost (expensive or inexpensive).

宿題 しゅくだい Homework

.1. Find a relevant image for today and write 五つ の complete sentences 日本語 で.
2. Practice writing each of the following kanji and kanji words 5 times:

            友達 ともだち Friend
   音楽 おんがく Music
   新聞 しんぶん Newspaper

Japanese 5-6

You should use as much of Nakama Chapter 10 vocabulary (and as many of the kanji from the Chapter 10 kanji sheet, which I will email to you) for this assignment as possible.  There's a lot about family members and descriptions of people's appearance and personalities, for example.  Maybe we can't meet our school friends right now, and maybe we can't travel to see family members far away, but we can think about them, imagine what they are doing, and describe them.

 宿題 しゅくだい Homework

1. Find a relevant image for today and write 五つ の complete sentences 日本語 で.
2. Practice writing each of the following kanji and kanji words 5 times:

           名前      なまえ         Name
     元気(な) げんき(な)     Energetic, well, healthy
     買い物 かいもの       Shopping
