Hiatus Post      2020.04.06     Monday        休けい時間 きゅうけい じかん
令和246   月曜日

おはよう ございます、みなさん    Good morning, everyone.

週末(しゅうまつ)は どう でした か。何を しました か。
What did you do over the weekend?

私 は 読んだり、食べたり、テレビ を 見たり 散歩(さんぽ)したり しました、
I did things like reading, eating, watching TV, and taking walks.

(For grammar mavens, here’s the explanation of --たり --たり する.  You use this form (derived from the plain past, with   added, and then する.  It means that you’re doing two or more things during the same time period, but not simultaneously, and there may be other things that you don’t mention.)

Remember the song, Dango-3-Kyoudai?  I’ve been sad because just now it’s not such a good idea to go to Mitsuwa (or gather at other big places) to buy wonderful traditional foods like dango.  And I was reminded of a famous Japanese proverb whose literal translation is, “Dumplings before flowers,” meaning something like “necessities before luxuries.”
花より団子 (はな より だんご)

And after that  それから I saw a wonderful old (around 1630 C.E.) haiku that references that proverb.

Not for spring flowers
But because there are dumplings
Do wild geese return.
                                                  (Kimmel translation/paraphrase)
Matsunaga Teitoku

はな より
団子やあり
帰る

So this haiku references 2 things that we particularly know about:  dumplings, and the kanji for the verb “to return-home”  帰 帰る かえ(る)We can use it in a couple of nice kanji-combination words, too, using kanji that we know or are learning.
帰来 きらい
home-coming (NOT in the sense of the early-football celebration)

帰休 ききゅう
(military) leave, furlough  return-home plus “to rest” 休む

帰心 きしん
homesickness     “return-home” plus “heart/mind 心

Japanese 3-4

Let’s practice numbers today.  Here’s a reminder, but you can also look at pages 267-269 in Chapter 8 of Nakama.

一 二 三 四 五 六 七 八 九 十
いち に さん し ご ろく しち はち きゅう じゅう

千 万 円
せん まん えん  not actually a number, but always used with numbers

宿題 しゅくだい Homework

A.   Look at the following kanji number expressions.  Rewrite the kanji, and then write the hiragana pronunciation and the English meaning.

四月 十日 五まい 三本

十さつ 千円 一万人 四つ

二千二十年 八百十七 九月

B.  Write a haiku about  桜 さくら cherry blossoms in either 日本語  or   英語。Please remember that the first line is supposed to be 5 syllables (not words), the second line is supposed to be 7 syllables, and the last lines is supposed to be 5 syllables again.

Japanese 5-6

We’re going to practice using the following verbs:
つとめる けっこん する すむ、すんで いる
to be employed          to get married                     to reside

ふとる やせる
to gain weight             to lose weight

宿題 しゅくだい Homework

A.   Rewrite the following questions in Japanese, and then write the answers 日本語 で.

おじいさん は けっこん して います か。

おじいさん は いつ けっこん しました。

学生(You)は どこ に すんで います か。

どんな ところ に すむ の が すき です か。

さいきん(Recently)お友達 は やせました か。

今年(ことしthis year) 学生(You)の ペット は ふとりました か。

Hiatus Post      2020.04.03     Friday        休けい時間 きゅうけい じかん

令和243   金曜日

おはよう、大切な(大切な) 学生 Good morning,  treasured students
今日(きょう)は 金曜日 です ね.
今日も いい お天気(てんき)です。      Today, too, the (honorable) weather is good.
今日 の ほう が きのう より 温度(おんど)は あたたかい です。The temperature will be warmer today than ( it was) yesterday.

There was an article in the Japan Times yesterday (I think) saying that the government is planning to give 2 face masks to each family (50,000,000 families) in Japan.  There’s also a funny cartoon as a sidebar of this article, criticizing the policy.  Can you figure out what it says?  Below is the link to the article.  What do you think of this idea?

Japanese 3-4

Let’s take it easy over the weekend.  We’ve been very  まじめ   all this week.  So, what I want you to do is go to YouTube and find a Japanese TV commercial with English subtitles.  Watch it several times.  What is it about?  Does it seem like American TV commercials to you?  Why, or why not?
Have a good weekend.  いい 週末(しゅうまつ)を おすごし 下さい。

宿題 しゅくだい Homework

A.   Send me the link to the commercial you chose, answer the questions, and also send me at least 5 Japanese words that you recognize, with their English translations.

B.   Practice the漢字 kanji from the Chapter 8 漢字のシート kanji sheet.

C. Extra credit:  Read the article from the Japan Times above and send me your opinion about it.  Is it a good idea?  What does the cartoon mean?

Japanese 5-6

I want you to take it easy this weekend.  Do you have Netflix or Hulu or something else at home?  Do you have DVDs of any Japanese movies with  subtitles?  If so, watch your favorite movie again.  You probably are able to understand more of the Japanese than you used to.  Do you think the subtitles are accurate?

Have a good weekend.  いい 週末(しゅうまつ)を おすごし 下さい。

宿題 しゅくだい Homework

A.   Send me the name of the film you chose.  Write down at least 10  words that you understood, with their English translations.  How did it feel to watch this film again?

B.   Practice the漢字 kanji from the Chapter 10 漢字のシート kanji sheet.

C. Extra credit:  go to the Japan Times link above and read it.  Send me your opinion about it.  Is it a good idea?  What does the cartoon mean?

Hiatus Post      2020.04.02     Thursday        休けい時間 きゅうけい じかん
令和241   木曜日

こんにち は、まじめな 学生 Hello, diligent students
今日(きょう)は 木曜日 です な。  Today is Thursday.
お天気(てんき)が いい です。 The (honorable) weather is good.
はれ で あまり さむく ありません。It’s clear and not very cold.
あめ が ふらない と おもいます。  It won’t rain, I think.
出かけます か。 散歩(さんぽ)します か。Will you go out?  Will you take a walk?

I wish I could take a walk with you (but 2 meters apart, of course)>

If you’re interested in finding out about the current weather in Japan, you can go to the website for the Japan Meteorlogical Agency,  jma.go.jp , and check it out.  They have a lot of information, in detail.

Japanese 3-4

I noticed in yesterday’s homework that people are having trouble with relational particles, so let’s practice a few.  Here’s a brief explanation of what four of the relational particles (usually) do:

wa  (ha)       indicates the subject or topic of the sentence

ni                   designates (1) a destination (with a traveling verb),
                   (2) a specific time with a name or a number,
                  (3) the place where something exists/is (existence verbs)

wo           indicates the direct object of a verb, the thing that “receives
                             the action of the verb”

no             is “the possessive,” when something belongs to something else

宿題 しゅくだい Homework

A.   Rewrite these following sentences, and add the correct relational particles.  Of course, in order to do that, you have to understand the sentences. You have to figure out what the subject and verb are, ね。

木曜日___ 学生 ___ 宿題 を します。
ねこ ___ うち ___ います。
今日(きょう)私 は スーパー ___ 行きません。
日本 ___ 食べもの は おいしい です か。
先生 は てがみ ___ 書きました。
みなさん、テスト ___ 始めて 下さい。
はる の はな ___ きれい です。
あした 友達 は 私 の うち ___ 来ません。

Please don’t hesitate to send me questions by email, if you have any.

B.  Yesterday was the birthday of the great Japanese actor, Toshiro Mifune ( known in Japan as Mifune Toshiro  三船 敏郎)  He appeared in films by Japan’s greatest film director, Akira Kurosawa (Kurosawa Akira  黒澤 明)Your assignment is to find out as much about Toshiro Mifune as you can and write 2 paragraphs (4 sentences each) about him 英語で

Japanese 5-6

Think about various famous people and figure out which ones could fit these descriptions.  Then rewrite the discriptions, with the ゆうめいな 人 の 名前 as the subject.  This is vocabulary from Nakama Chapter 10.  Notice the wa/ga pattern in all these sentences.

Example:

メガン・マークル は かお が きれい です。Meghan Markle has a pretty face.

 宿題 しゅくだい Homework

A.  Here are the sentences.
1.      ____ は せ が 高い です。
2.     ___ は 目(め) が 大きい です。
3.     ___ は かみ が みじかい です。
4.     ___ は あし が ながい です。
5.     ___ は 日本語 が わかります(understands/knows.
6.     _____ は あたま が いい です。
7.     ___ は テニス が 上手(じょうずskillful, good-at)です。
                                                            (They canceled Wimbledon!  Sob!)
8.     ___ は かお が まるい です。

B. Yesterday was the birthday of the great Japanese actor, Toshiro Mifune ( known in Japan as Mifune Toshiro  三船 敏郎He appeared in films by Japan’s greatest film director, Akira Kurosawa (Kurosawa Akira  黒澤 明)Your assignment is to find out as much about  Mifune Toshiro as you can and write 2 paragraphs (4 sentences each) about him 英語で

休けい時間 きゅうけい じかん Time of Intermission

おはよう ございます、みなさん。うち に います か。Are you at home?  Please be careful and safe.

Here’s a link that you might enjoy.  It reviews some well-known and not-so-well-known Japanese vocabulary.  Please ignore the ads, though.  There’s one that is a straight-out piece of political propaganda from the Epoch Times, a news source founded by a group associated with Falun Gong, the Chinese spiritual group outlawed by the Chinese government.

Japanese 3-4

ソーシャルディスタンス or 社会的距離確保

During social distancing, we are in our homes a lot, so let’s go on a 宝探し(たからさがし) “treasure hunt,” to look for objects and write about where they are?

Examples:
ボールペン は どこ に あります か。Where is the ballpoint pen?
つくえ の 上 に ありますIt’s on top of the desk
犬(いぬ)は どこ に います か。Where is the dog?
いす の 下 に いますHe/she/it is under the chair.

宿題 しゅくだい Homework

A.  Write the answers like the ones above for the locations of the following objects.
    どこ?

          notebook        pencil                         food                       textbook
          computer        dictionary                  car                           sofa
          cat                     fish (that’s alive)

The following words may be useful: (You could look at Nakama lessons 4 and 5, too.

 kitchen                   bookshelf                garage                  living room
 だいどころ       ほんだな ガレージ リビングルーム

  Fish tank                         drawer                        refrigerator
水槽(すいそう)      引き出し(ひきだし) 冷蔵庫(れいぞうこ)

bedroom
寝室(しんしつ)

B.  This should be fun, if you feel like it.  The Japanese Consulate sent out another link for things we can do at home.  There is even a link for printing out your own origami paper, if you don't have any at home.    Announcing our JAPAN CLASSROOM! We’ll be sharing some Japanese cultural activities you can enjoy from home. Today we're going to try some simple origami. Origami is easy and fun--all you need is a piece of square paper! Follow the instructions and share a picture of your "talking dog" in the comments. https://bit.ly/2QFffQi
