Vocabulary

1.  【れい】 - zero
2.  ゼロ - zero
3.  マル - circle; zero
4.  【てん】 - period; point
5.  マイナス - minus
Zero in Japanese is but ゼロ or マル is more common in modern Japanese. There is no special method for reading decimals, you simply say for the dot and read each individual number after the decimal point. Here's an example:
·         0.0021 = ゼロゼロゼロ
For negative numbers, everything is the same as positive numbers except that you say マイナス first.

·         マイナス二十九 = -29

Nenga-jo Contest Directions

Illinois Association of Teachers of Japanese 2016 Nengajō Festival

A current IATJ member may submit only ONE card per student for each school in which the member teaches.

One teacher can enter only 10 entries so that the process of evaluation can be speeded up! Please only submit cards that meet the following criteria.

 ● The Nengajō must be on 4x6 inch white, unlined, index card. (年賀状は4x6インチの無地のインデックスカードに限る)

 ● The student must write his/her full name
                                                     in ink
                                                     vertically
                                                     on the bottom left-hand side of the card,
                                                     relative to the direction of the design.
It is preferable to write the name in Katakana, but names written in English are acceptable. Students with names that can be written in Kanji may use either hiragana or kanji as appropriate. The use of teacher-assigned Japanese names is not allowed. All students, including elementary students must write his/her full name. (生徒は必ずデ ザインの向きに合わせてカードの左下にインクで縦に名前を書かなければならない。名前はカ タカナで書くことが望ましいが英語でもかまわない。名前に漢字が含まれている生徒はひらがな でも漢字でも適した方を使ってよい。生徒は必ず本名を用い、先生が便宜上、生徒に与えた日 本名は使ってはいけない。エントリーする生徒は小学生も含めて必ず名前を書かなければなら ない。)

● The Nengajō design must include: the year 2016 and either GANTAN (元旦) or TSUITACHI (一日) written in kanji. Students may include other appropriate phrases or best wishes in Japanese like

● The design theme must focus on the up-coming 2016 New Year, Year of the Monkey: or . The design should also creatively focus, in some manner, on how the New Year is celebrated in Japan. The card design should be related to the animal of the year represented in socially acceptable manner. (2016年は  さる年  なので、「さる」をテーマにデザインしなければならない。 デザインは誰が見ても社会的に受け入れられるようなものでなければならない。)
